Antisocial Behaviour (ASB): What It Is, How We Can Help, and How to Report It

Dear Hanger Hill Residents,

As we move into warmer weather, we often see an increase in antisocial behaviour (ASB). Longer evenings and more people spending time outdoors can sometimes lead to issues that affect residents’ quality of life. We want to ensure everyone knows what ASB is, how the police can support you, and what you can do to help prevent and report it.

What is Antisocial Behaviour?

Antisocial behaviour is any action that causes harassment, alarm, or distress to others. This can include:

Excessive noise (such as loud music or shouting)

Vandalism or damage to property

Groups gathering and causing intimidation

Alcohol‑related nuisance or disorder

Drug dealing or drug misuse

Aggressive or abusive behaviour

Off‑road bikes or vehicles being used irresponsibly

ASB can affect individuals, families and entire communities, and we take reports of it seriously.

How the Police Can Help

The police and partner agencies work together to address antisocial behaviour. Depending on the situation, we can:

Respond to incidents and provide reassurance

Increase patrols in areas experiencing repeat issues

Work with local councils, housing providers and youth services

Use enforcement powers such as warnings, community protection notices or dispersal powers where appropriate

Support long‑term problem-solving to prevent issues from continuing

Your information helps us build a better picture of what is happening in your area and target our resources effectively.

How to Report Antisocial Behaviour

Please report ASB as soon as possible so it can be dealt with appropriately:

In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress and someone is at immediate risk, call 999

For non‑emergency ASB, report it online via your local police website or by calling 101

You can also report anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online

When reporting, try to include:

Dates and times of incidents

A description of what happened

Where it occurred

Any descriptions of those involved (if safe to do so)

Crime Prevention Advice

Residents can also take simple steps to help prevent ASB and keep communities safe:

Secure your home, gardens, sheds and vehicles

Be mindful of noise, especially during late hours

Challenge behaviour only if it is safe to do so – otherwise report it

Get to know your neighbours and look out for one another

Report issues early, before they escalate

Parents and guardians are encouraged to know where their children are and what they are doing, particularly during school holidays and evenings

ASB is not something communities should tolerate, but it is best addressed when residents, police and partner agencies work together. By reporting concerns and taking preventative steps, you help us keep the area safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
